What is Craps?

August 29, 2013

Craps is a type of dice game where casino players can place bets on the outcome of the roll. The game of craps was first developed from the game known as hazard, which was an early English game. It dates back to the time of the Crusades and has since been influences heavily by French gamblers. During the Second World War, craps became immensely popular among the soldiers. The contemporary game of craps is played by multiple players who place bets against the casino. Each casino usually has a different set of payouts for a variety of bets. The casino players take turns rolling the dice and whoever is throwing them is known as the casino shooter. The casino players can place bets on a variety of choices by placing the casino chips in the appropriate section of the craps table.

When a casino player wants to join the craps game without being the craps shooter, they usually state that they want to play. If the "on" button is in play, then a point number has been established. This indicates that a bet can be placed. If the button is in the "off" position, then a point has not been established and the bet cannot usually be placed. During the dice rolls, the craps dealer will make the various payouts to the winners and collect the losing bets. Casino players seeking to get into the game can also at this time place bets.

There are several types of wagers that can be made in the game of craps including the pass line bet, which is referred to as the fundamental bet in the game of craps where the bet wins if the come out roll is ends up being a 7 or an 11. Essentially with this bet, the casino player is betting that the shooter will win, while the don't pass line bet is the opposite where the casino player is wagering that the shooter will lose. Both the pass line and don't pass line bets pay even money.

There is also the come bet, which is a type of bet that happens once a point number has been established typically. It is almost like the pass line bet except the rule that the wager has to happen following the point number being established. There are also single roll bets, known as service bets. These types of bets are usually placed by the craps dealer for the casino player. They include the snake eyed bet where the casino player wins if the craps shooter rolls the number 2; the ace-deuce, where the casino player wins if the craps shooter rolls the number 3; the Yo bet, where the casino player wins if the craps shooter rolls the number 11; the 12, where the casino player wins if the craps shooter rolls the number 12; any craps, where the casino player wins if a 2, 3, or 12 is rolled by the craps shooter and the C&E bet where the casino player wins based on a combined bet of one half being the yo bet and the other being on craps (the craps shooter rolling a 2, 3 or 12).
