What is Roulette?

August 22, 2013

Roulette is considered to be a betting game where players place bets on a certain number or a range of numbers. In order for the winning number and color to be determined, the roulette dealer also known as a croupier spins the wheel in one particular direction. The ball is then spun in the opposite direction around a track that is circular. The ball then gains momentum and eventually loses that momentum and lands on a particular number. The ball can land on any of the numbers. Essentially, Roulette is a game of probability with the payout odds for each type of bet being based solely on that.

The Roulette table is covered with a cloth. The betting area is known as the layout. The layout either has a single zero or a double zero. The European style of Roulette has a single zero, whereas the American style has both a single and double zero. Most casinos, both online and off utilize the American style layout. There is also a French style Roulette layout, that is only used in casinos in Monte Carlo.

There are both inside bets and outside bets that can be wagered on a Roulette table. Inside bets are placed on particular numbers. There are six types of inside bets that include the straight up, the street, the split, the corner, the six line and the trio. Straight up operates just like it sounds. For example, if you bet on the number black 31, and the ball lands on black 31 then you win. The split is when the bet is placed on two numbers. Street bets and trio bets work in terms of betting on three numbers. Trio bets are usually those that are in conjunction with zero or double zero.

Corner bets are bets placed on four different numbers. The outside bets in Roulette also types of bets that casino players can wager on. Casino players can bet on 1 to 18, 19 to 36, red or black, column bets (which are vertical bets), dozen bets (such as 1-12; 13-24 or 25-36) and even or odd.

In the game of Roulette, the house edge is considered to be the amount the casino player can lose relative to the wager that is placed. If a player bets on a single number for example, the probability of 1 out of 38 that the casino player wins 35 times that bet. Outside bets tend to lose when a single or double zero happens to be called. The house has an edge on these types of bets as well as inside bets because the pay that is received is always set at 35:1. It is important not to confuse the house's edge with what is known as the hold. The hold is the average percentage of money that is originally brought to the Roulette game that the casino player loses prior to leaving the Roulette table. This is considered to be the actual win for the casino.

The game of Roulette is both exciting and thrilling both online and off. Casino players have the capability of winning big payouts, as well as losing significantly. There are many places online that discuss the various strategies and tips that a casino player can use in playing and capitalizing on the various bets that can be wagered.
